Happy Tuesday! Today I got quite a bit done on this reworking of a piece from several years ago. It was a desert landscape and still is but simply was too busy.
Often I go overboard when I’ve having a good time (who doesn’t?). But when painting, knowing when to stop or when to pause and think about whether it’s done or not is really hard. I’ve seen many artists booger up a really great piece. A few years ago, a buddy and I were at a live painting demo by Jimmy HaHa (remember him from the grunge 90’s band, Jimmy’s Chicken Shack?). I really like his work and even made a purchase (Mama T is the piece and it’s gorgeous!!!). The demo was at the Annapolis Fringe Festival. Jimi, a married dad of one, was in drag and pretty skunked when he painted live on a stage, a really fantastic portrait of Einstein. It was perfection. That is, until he kept going. It could have been the whiskey, but poor Einstein ended up looking rather overdone. The buddy I was with, Patrice Drago (another fantastic Annapolis artist) and I agreed that he could have stopped about fifteen minutes in. His composition was perfection and didn’t need anything else. But again, knowing when to stop is the hardest part of art…
So, today I have a reworked piece that I am finally happy about. This piece is very much a complementary piece to a Zion National Park piece that now lives in a beautiful English cottage in Cincinnati.
I should have this one wrapped up by the end of the day tomorrow.
